The DJ Basin Safety Council is an organization that originally started to ensure accessible safety information and training to the subcontractors in the industry. Our members include oil and gas contractors, producers, safety consultants, community members, and many others who have an interest in the safety and wellbeing of those in our field.

The DJ Basin safety Council was originally founded with the following mission statement:

“To promote safety, environmental stewardship, and standardized training for all contractors and employees in the DJ Basin, and encourage a cordial working relationship with the municipalities and citizens of Colorado”.

This mission to promote safety for all oil & gas contractor companies and their employees has been at the forefront of every endeavor the council has engaged in. We hold monthly meetings to share information about safety issues in the industry, emerging safety technology, and to be beneficial for our member companies. Members come to share safety related news, hazard alerts, and upcoming events with the membership. We have regular updates from Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department Of Transportation (DOT), Colorado State Patrol, Emergency Responders, and many others. Providing resources for training, safety information sharing, and regulatory updates is an integral part of each meeting. We have become the Northern Colorado Chapter of the National STEPS Network, a group dedicated to promote safety throughout our industry.

Our goal is to encourage all companies large and small to value the safety of their employees, take environmental responsibility to conduct our industries’ work operations in a safe manner, and encourage a strong working relationship with the communities and municipalities where we work and live. By sharing information and new technology and working with OSHA’s Denver Office to promote training and compliance assistance, we continuously work to make the industry safer for everyone.

We also engage in a number of community outreach opportunities throughout the year. We participate in the annual North Central COGA Chili Cook-off, the Weld County Damage Prevention breakfast, and hold a Clay Shoot each spring to raise funds for our prize event – our annual Gift Card give-away program. During the Thanksgiving & Christmas Holiday Season we give out $25 gift cards to those within our community that look like they could use a little help. In 2015 we gave out over $7500 in gift cards within our Weld County Community.

Every industry has its share of inherent risks  – the key is knowing what those risks are and using effective hazard control measures to safely work around those hazards. Safety is a constantly evolving endeavor for every industry. We have seen tremendous growth in safety in oil & gas over the last decade, and that growth will not stop. We invite you to attend one of our meetings to see what we are about! We meet the first Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Recreation Center in Fort Lupton, Colorado. We would be happy to have you!
