Session: The Intersection of Regulation and Technology

The regulatory environment in Colorado has shifted dramatically in recent years, placing Colorado on the leading edge of a regulatory space where public policy, technology and goal setting have increasingly co-mingling in the regulatory process.  Case-in-point, Colorado’s emission control efforts have shifted where the availability of technologies have influenced rulemaking decisions and has diverted focus away from the ultimate goal of emission reduction.  Such approach – prescribing specific technologies – prevents operators from innovating and seeking alternative best practices and emerging technology to achieve reduction goals.  While technology and feasibility will always play a role, how does industry maintain steady focus on goals amid political pressures and competing agendas, and successfully defend their ability to be nimble and innovate their practices?  What are the lessons learned that may apply to future regulatory efforts?

Session: Oil & Gas Employment Trends - Riding Through Market Disruptions

Recent economic shifts have had a dramatic impact on the employment market, with compounding an already evolving employment market with the oil and gas industry.  With fewer larger companies and increase in smaller start-ups, job-seekers will need to adapt, develop new skills and take an entrepreneurial approach to employment.  What do the current trends mean for the oil and gas workforce in the state, and how can these emerging shifts provide expanded – if unconventional – opportunities for both employees and employers?

Session: Ballot Battles –  Lessons Learned

The oil and natural gas industry in Colorado is no stranger to contending with issues on the Colorado ballot. In a state where the ballot process is accessible to special interests, citizen groups and activists, the industry certainly isn’t the only one subjected to these ballot battles.  Transportation, growth, housing and health care are frequent issues that require the leadership and engagement of the business and civic community.  What lessons can we learn from each other?  This session will dive into the who, what and why that drives these ballot issues, and identify the opportunities for us to support each other going forward.

Session: Oil & Gas Employment Trends - Riding Through Market Disruptions

Over the past several years, many industries have seen the evolution to a “gig economy” – a trend defined by flexible contract-based employment where employees are freelancers and employers are adapting the needs of the moment.  With recent shifts in the Colorado employment market, the gig economic has arrived to oil and gas, with fewer larger companies, an increase in smaller start-ups and the need for an entrepreneurial approach to employment.  What does this mean for the oil and gas workforce in the state and how can these emerging trends provide expanded – if unconventional – opportunities for both employees and employers?

Session: The Art of Public Messaging | How Do You Reach A Skeptical Audience?

Chris Wright will explore the art of public messaging on this panel, addressing important questions and challenges. Where has industry lost its way in winning the hearts and minds of the public? What can it do to improve? Who are the pragmatic stakeholders on the other side of the issue and what do they think about our message? What can we learn from their examples? And perhaps most importantly, going forward, how can we effectively convey our message to a general public that may be pre-disposed against the oil and gas industry?

Building Social Capital: How Safety and Health Culture Affects Public Image

Creating a contemporary and holistic safety program and work culture not only creates empowered and ethical performers, but also serves the communities in which you operate and where your employees live. Oil and gas leads the way in industrial safety, because it is the right thing to do for the “work family” and it supports good business. When safe, healthy, and inspired employees leave work, they are engaged community members and outspoken advocates for their company. Conversely, employees who experience workplace injuries, low motivation, and a lack of connection to the work family are adversely impacted at home and can damage company image. Understanding the community interests in an oil and gas producers current and future work is important and helps to create and sustain beneficial and authentic relationships.

Responsiveness to Climate and Environment Through Technology and Investment

With air quality, water, and climate change continuing to dominate the political and public debate, investors have also taken notice and have expected that oil and gas operations respond to climate change and other environmental concerns. As technology evolves, new opportunities for efficiency and clean energy use have become more feasible.  What are the latest breakthroughs in clean energy technology, and who is using them?  As more companies adopt these technologies in the field, what are we learning about their successful use – and their limitations? This session will explore emerging trends, current applications, and how success is measured and communicated to investors and the public.
