Session: Combating Climate Change Together

Everything we do each day has an impact on our environment – from driving cars, growing, and consuming food, building, or remodeling our homes and providing the power to make it all happen. The oil and natural gas industry in Colorado is taking bold, proactive steps toward sustainability and cleaning our air to ensure we have a long and thriving future. We are not alone in this endeavor, with many other like-minded industries in the state showing their leadership and making major changes to lower their emissions and shrink their footprints.  This panel will feature our partners in progress, focusing on our collective efforts to combat climate change and integrate strategies within current regulatory efforts.

2021 Panelist Profile | Q&A with Matthew

Have you attended The Energy Summit before? As a guest or panelist?
In 2019, I joined a panel with other industry leaders to provide a holistic view of the impact of the avalanche of legislation and regulation with its impact on our respective industries.  We attempted to underscore the need for unity across all the sectors, so that we are not fighting the same battles in isolation.

What brings you back? – AND/OR - What are you looking forward to at this year’s Energy Summit (aside from your session)?
This was a well-informed and engaged group - it is easy to feed off that energy.  But now, two years on from our last meeting, the environmental movement did not go into hibernation during the pandemic.  So, it is time to assess where we are today and how we can respond to stop from being regulated into bankruptcy.
What made you decide to join us at this 33rd Annual Energy Summit conference to participate on this panel, and how they are interpreted?

Why do you think your panel topic is critical in the oil and natural gas industry at this time?
It is very easy to get tunnel vision on obstacles in front of us.  If we can refocus to see a forest through the trees, there may be opportunities to understand, get ahead of the tide, and prepare for some of the issues coming down the pipeline.
What is your personal favorite story about, or characteristic of the Colorado oil and natural gas community and those who work in it?

Any great books or binge-worthy shows to recommend?
I am a fan of Peter Singer, so there have been two in the last few years.  “LikeWar” is about how nation and non-nation states manipulate populations through the use of social media and disinformation.  More recently, “Burn In” is a novel that describes the future intersection of government/law enforcement and artificial intelligence, and the associated risks.
